Fine Napoleon III Bronze And Porcelain Clock Garniture, Circa 1870

A fine and impressive example of a French 19th-century ormolu and bronze and porcelain mantel clock garniture dating to circa 1870.

This beautiful antique French Napoleon III mantel clock garniture, dating to circa 1870, features a jewelled-form clock. The clock has a bronze base decorated with ormolu mounts and a rectangular hand-painted Sevres-style porcelain panel. The base issues a large square body housing a hand-painted porcelain dial featuring individual white cartouches with black hand-painted Roman numerals and an outer chapter indicating minute and five-minute marks. The centre of the dial depicts an exquisitely hand-painted scene of a maiden from antiquity. The clock is surmounted by a porcelain twin-handled finial flanked by rams' heads and raised on four ormolu toupie feet.

The clock is flanked by its original pair of candlesticks; each with square bronze bases issuing cylindrical porcelain bodies with hand-painted 'jewelled' decoration set against bleu celeste grounds. Each candlestick is surmounted by three candle holders and raised on four toupie feet.

The eight-day twin train mechanical movement strikes the hours and half on a bell and comes complete with its winding key and pendulum. The mechanism is stamped by one of the most renowned, important, and awarded 19th-century clock makers, Japy Freres.

Approximate Dimensions:

  • Clock: 41 cm high x 20 cm wide x 13 cm deep
  • Candlesticks (each): 34 cm high x 20 cm wide x 8.5 cm deep

Condition:

Overall, the clock is in good condition. It has a clean movement and has recently been serviced. The ormolu is in good condition and retains a good colour, and the inlay is all intact. The minute hand is missing.

Please note: As an antique mechanical clock, its delicate movement may be affected by transport. Buyers should be aware that the clock may require setting up, adjustments, or professional assistance upon arrival to ensure smooth functioning after being moved.
